I am the nursing co-ordinator for Kate’s Home Nursing, a hospice at home service in the North Cotswolds, Gloucestershire. I also work 3 sessions a week as a practice nurse which helps to maintain both my clinical competency and provides a good balance my H@H role.
Patients referred to Kate’s have access to a dedicated team of qualified nurses and health care assistants who have a proven interest in palliative/terminal care and who have demonstrated an understanding of the philosophy that underpins the provision of community based care and hospice at home type services. The service is open to any patient who is suffering from a life limiting disease which will not respond to curative treatment and is available at any stage of the disease progression.
I am passionate about enabling patients to die at home if this is their wish, and firmly believe that working within this area of care is the most love and life affirming role I have ever had as a nurse. I was elected to the forum in October 2008 and am looking forward to working more closely with the management committee to further progress the H@H cause and celebrate all that is truly remarkable and humbling about caring for someone who is dying at home.
